Alternative Limb Project
26 March, 2023
The gradual detachment from Western-centric and ableist thinking, is making its way into design, education, and technology. Initiatives like The Alternative Limb Project is a design and engineering initiative aimed at creating bespoke prosthetic limbs for amputees that are not only functional, but also beautiful and unique.
The project was started by Sophie de Oliveira Barata, a prosthetics artist and designer, who noticed that many prosthetic limbs were generic and not tailored to the individual’s personality or style. The project offers a more personalized approach, creating custom-made limbs that incorporate artistic elements such as intricate designs, bright colors, and unique materials. The goal of the project is to empower amputees and give them a sense of pride in their prosthetic limb, helping them to feel more confident and comfortable in their everyday lives.
