Robot Penguins could relay the untold mysteries of the ocean. The Quadroin is an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV): a 3D-printed self-propelled machine designed to mimic a penguin in order to measure the properties of oceanic eddies. Eddies play an important role in the marine ecosystem, moving heat, nutrients, and gases between the surface waters and ocean depths below. However, studying eddies has proven difficult because they disappear after an average of 12 hours. The solution came from EvoLogics, who specialize in bionics based on natural evolution.
