Sea Cleaners

28 July, 2021

Manta is a giant, plastic-eating catamaran powered by renewable energy. Launching in 2024, it is set to be the world’s first sea-cleaning vessel capable of collecting plastic waste on an industrial scale. World-record sailor Yvan Bourgnon is the mastermind behind the venture. During 20 years of transatlantic competitions and various solo world tours, Bourgnon witnessed a sharp increase in ocean pollution. The boat, which is still in the concept stage, was inspired in part by the manta ray, which eats as it swims with an open mouth. Photo by @seacleaners
