Traditionally, genetically-engineered plants have been developed with increased resistance to pests or improved nutrient content in mind, but scientist have now set their sights on plants with air-purifying qualities.

Paris-based startup Neoplant taps into the natural air-filtering properties of plants. The company has genetically engineering the beloved Pothos houseplant and its associated root microbiome. This has in turn produced a houseplant that can do the same amount of air-purifying work of up to 30 plants. Neoplant’s newly launched Neo P1 was developed using clean energy and provided carbon-neutral air-filtration, minimising pollutants in homes.
