Language Extinction
28 July, 2021
The United Nations has declared 2022–2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, dedicated to raising awareness about the endangerment of these languages. Indigenous peoples pass on their knowledge of medicinal plants orally; if their languages go extinct, valuable medical knowledge will be lost. A 2021 study estimates that 75% of the world’s medicinal plant applications are only known in one language – and more strongly associated with threatened languages than with threatened plants.
