With consumers searching for more sustainable shopping options, outerwear brand @kathmandugear has launched its new BioDown jacket. With puffer jackets being one of the brand’s best sellers the jacket offers an opportunity to tackle fashion’s waste problem head-on. The product is designed to be durable, and the cotton production sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people by using natural processes. The manufacturing process ensures all of the the jackets’ components complete the biodegradation process within three to five years making it possible for consumers to literally wear this jacket to death.

The puffer’s biodegradation is designed to work in biologically active landfills without oxygen. Customers can use the Kathmandu website to see if their local council can meaningfully dispose of the garment. According to brand’s chief executive, it’s the companies purpose “to improve the wellbeing of the world through the outdoors’ and one part of fulfilling this is constantly improving the sustainability of our products.” Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action is committed to halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. With 6000 kilograms of textile waste ending up in Australian landfills every 10 minutes, fashion giants are looking to Biodegradability, reuse and recycling to tackle the industry’s landfill problem.
