New World Mall
8 September, 2021
Stephanie H. Shih’s “New World Mall” exhibition is a collection of 30 life-size ceramic and hand-painted replicas of nostalgic grocery products. Shih crowd sourced ideas from her IG following asking what common Western grocery items “felt” Asian to them. In an interview for the Los Angeles Times Shih questions the idea of “Authentic” cuisine. “Culture isn’t static. It’s ever moving. And so, with this series, I really wanted to make a statement that these Western products, which we have incorporated into our cuisines, are authentically part of our cultures as well.” says Shih.
