Wildlife Crossing
5 May, 2022
Besides being one of the busiest freeways in California, the 101 also crosses a vital natural habitat for protected mountain lions, deer and coyotes. Since 2002, at least 25 big cats have been killed on the Pacific Coast highway. In April, construction began on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing which will be one of the largest green bridges in the US. This overpass is designed to seamlessly integrate with the mountains, offering a safe right of way to animals native to the Santa Monica area. Landscape architect on the project, Robert Rock, believes it’s integral to retain the integrity of the natural habitat by mimicking the surrounding ecosystem. “This is restoring a piece of lost habitat, putting it back across the mountains”
